Stop Thinking About Exercises And Start Thinking About Movement Patterns
I want you to STOP thinking about EXERCISES and start thinking about MOVEMENT PATTERNS.
Why?
Whether you do conventional or sumo deadlifts will not make or break your selection success.
A failure to include the following 3 movement patterns, could.
Remember:
Movement patterns are primary.
Exercise selection is secondary.
This Friday, I’ll release a video on my 6 Favorite Exercises for Selection, which will include movement patterns you need to train, exercise selection criteria, and how to organize your training.
In the meantime, here’s a preview of three movement patterns you need in your routine:
Hip Hinge

The hip hinge is a lower back builder and critical to your durability, both during training and for the longevity of your career. While you may feel upper back and shoulder fatigue during your rucks, I often find that back discomfort is a result of compromised posture as the lower back fatigues and your back begins to fold.
Squat

While there’s no squat test at selection, you will have 65 plus lbs on your back for multiple hours at a time for days in a row. And to withstand that, you need bulletproof legs. The best way to develop bulletproof legs is with your squat variation exercises.
Pulling Movements

Pulling movements encapsulate both vertical like with pull ups and horizontal like with barbell or dumbbell rows. Your pulling strength will be especially valuable when rucking, moving apparatuses, and carrying heavy objects.
And while grip strength is critical for heavy carries, upper back strength is just as important. A strong upper back stabilizes your shoulder girdle, reducing the strain on your hands and forearms, allowing you to grip longer and harder.
I hope you found this edition helpful. Stay tuned for the full video on Friday.
